Do away with ‘gross consumerism’ this Christmas, says prelate
MANILA, Philippines - Christmas is not a reason to spend excessively and waste valuable resources, Caloocan Bishop Deogracias Iniguez said.
In a press release, the prelate called on the public to celebrate the season simply and do away with “gross consumerism.”
“As we recall with joy the birth of our Redeemer, I encourage everyone to observe it in simplicity and be watchful of crass consumerism and the ensuing garbage that it generates,” Iniguez told CBCP News.
The prelate also joined anti-pollution watchdog EcoWaste Coalition in expressing concern on the amount of garbage generated during the holidays.
Ecowaste Coalition president Roy Alvarez earlier said that while some traditions are worth keeping, trash should not become part of them.
A resident in Manila produces half a kilo of trash daily. This goes up to a kilo or more during the holidays.
“Instead of trashing Mother Earth even more this Christmas, let’s give her the appreciation and respect that she deserves. It’s time for us to start a new tradition, namely that of being more protective and mindful of our environment,” Alvarez said.
“Why do we have to add to the mounting garbage problem by buying into the consumerist philosophy that is pushed on us by commercial interests during the Christmas season,” he asked.
The group urged the public to observe an eco-friendly lifestyle by being creative in using available resources.
It recommended using recyclable materials and avoid unnecessary spending by reusing old items and unwanted gifts.
