CBCP seeks Vatican clarification on condom use

MANILA, Philippines - The Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) is appealing to the public to refrain from judging the statement made by Pope Benedict XVI on the use of condoms.
The Pope had said the use condoms is justified if used as protection against HIV-AIDS.
This is the first time the Catholic church has recognized the use of contraceptives to prevent the spread of AIDS, but it still believes it should not be used as a contraceptive.
Bishop Deogracias Iniguez, CBCP head of public affairs, said on Monday that they will seek a clarification from the Vatican in connection to what the Pope said.
"Parang nagkaroon kasi ng twist sa lumabas sa balita, dapat tingnan kung ano yun context at yun buong statement," Iniguez said.
He added that once they get a confirmation in connection with what the Pope said, the CBCP will come out with a pastoral statement which would include guidance on the teachings and laws of the Church on the use of condoms as protection and not as a contraceptive.
On the other hand, groups in favor of the passage of the reproductive health bill in Congress said the CBCP is just trying to save face.
They said Philippine bishops did not expect that the Pope would change his mind about the use of contraceptives as protection.
