Bishop calls for restraint over South China Sea dispute

MANILA, Philippines - A member of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) has called for the easing of tensions over the disputed South China Sea.

Caloocan Bishop Deogracias Iñiguez asked parties to stop the intimidation, CBCP News reported.

“We should always look for peaceful ways to resolve the matter. We owe it to our people and to the world to advocate and work for peace,” Iñiguez said.

“Always go for dialogue and not conflicts,” he added.

Both the Philippines and Vietnam have formally conveyed their displeasure over supposed Chinese vessel sighting in the area.

The Department of National Defense and the Armed Forces of the Philippines earlier said that a China Marine Surveillance vessel and other People’s Liberation Army Navy ships were seen at the vicinity of the Iroquois Reef-Amy Douglas Bank.
